Sundown Adventureland in Retford, Nottinghamshire, is a small theme park designed for under 10's situated about an hour from Leicester near Retford. It is a family friendly park and doesn't allow any teenagers unless accompanied by an adult.
I have taken my son before, but being nearly 5, he was able to enjoy the rides a lot more this time. The rides are all gentle and last no longer than 5 minutes. There is a boozy barrel ride which takes you in a boat around a little river, whilst models of pirates talk to you and move in scenes, some squirt water at you! Above the ride is a walkway which has lots of push buttons to watch various interactive pirate walkways.
The park is split into different areas, pirate, cowboy, farm and storybook. Other interactive rides include a train, tractors and robin hood ride. There are a lot of interactive scenes and models around the park, all of which were working. The park is clean and well looked after.
The storybook village has lots of little houses each themed to different fairy tales etc. You can go in all of these and have scenes inside. There is a castle made of sweets you can also walk around. Most of the park consists of villages and themed buildings and shops. There is a new official Angry Birds outdoor play area which is being expanded to include some rides and various other themed play areas.
On top of this, are two huge indoor soft play places with cafes, one jungle themed and one wild west. They all have huge play areas, slides etc and are well kept. I believe one of them is open in the winter when the park is shut.
Queuing for the few rides was minimal, as we went just out of school holidays, but staff on all the rides were friendly. There are nice grassy areas for picnics and an undercover area.
All in all a great day out and there are no negatives I can think of. It is essentially a huge model village, with buildings to explore with rides and interactive exhibits. I think anyone expecting any thrill rides would be disappointed, but I guess that's why it is aimed at under 10s. It is better in the sunny weather, but enough to do under cover if the weather is iffy. Good value I thought at £11.75 each. We were there for four hours, but easily could spend longer if you explore all the buildings and environments.
